Since the Sony WH1000XM6 (XM6 for short) came this summer, we have wanted to make an adapter to fit it.
Unfortunately, we have been too busy finishing the Bluelink to work on it, but NOW the time is here.
The first tests tell us that this product from Sony is simply amazing; it is simply a new era for ANR headsets. We will release the Avee fitting the XM6 early next year.
We had a six hours flight with the XM6 – both with and without the Bluelink R3 (the new one with the volume wheel), and I am simply really pleased with the XM6.
And no; we are not getting any free lunches from Sony to write something positive about them.
The pros
- The comfort
The comfort when wearing the Sony headsets have always been exceptionally good: Lightweight, low squeece force (the pressure from the headset on your scull (..)) – and of way the earcup fits OVER your ears. - Over-the-ear fit
All the headsets from Bose and Sony we support are over-the-ear-fit headsets.
And when the headset is over-the-ear-fit, the ear should really be inside the earcup. The earcup should not be resting on the ear.
When I am using the Bose headsets, the earcup is resting on my ear, and this is a bit annoying when the flight is long.
This is also affecting how well both the passive and active noise cancellation from the headset will be.
Most of us men have normal-sized ears; and they tend to grow (sadly, as the only body part (apart from the belly) ) when we get older.
The earcup on the Bose headset does not fit the size of my fairly normal (and beautiful) ears.
The Sony XM6 has slightly larger earcups than the Bose, and in my world it gives a much better fit than with the Bose headsets.
Result: better comfort and better ANR (which we are coming back to you in a second). - Audio quality
The audio quality on the XM6 is superb: wonderful bass and a clear treble. I have a few songs on my phone which I use for testing headsets, and I am simply impressed. - The noise cancellation
All the headsets we support have ANR or ANC:- ANC (Active Noise Cancellation: This is the standard term Sony uses, often with advanced versions like “Advanced Noise Cancelling 3” for superior noise blocking.
- ANR (Active Noise Reduction): This is just another name for the same technology, where microphones pick up noise and headphones create an opposite sound wave to cancel it out.
.
- ANC (Active Noise Cancellation: This is the standard term Sony uses, often with advanced versions like “Advanced Noise Cancelling 3” for superior noise blocking.
The ANC on the XM6 is simply incredible. Compared to the ANC in the Bose headsets (both recreational and A20/A30) is simply in a different league.
Don’t trust me ! Go to your local store and test it!!
- The build quality
The build quality on the XM6 is extremely good as well.
Mechanically, it is very well constructed, and the fact that it is now foldable – makes it take up little room in your bag. - Changing the headset ‘pillows’
When you are using any headset ‘on a professional basis’ – you will need to change the headset pillows or cushion once in a while.
Changing the pillows on the Sony XM6 is really simple; you do it in a minute or two.
Those of you who have tried to change the pillows on a Bose headset, know that that is a different story. It is doable, but a big pain. - The Avee integration
The integration with the Avee system will be simple on the XM6. We are doing it the same way as on the XM5, and this has proven to be a very stable platform for the Avee headset adapter.
The XM6 (like on all Sony headsets we support), is using the 3.5mm audio connector – which simply is a better connector than the 2.5mm connector used by Bose.
.
The cons
Almost forgot the cons.
- Pricy
The main issue with the XM6 is that it is fairly pricy: around EUR 400 in Norway ex VAT.
We believe the price will decrease – and we have already had one sales in Norway (of course we did not purchase then).
.
However; us humble people at Avee talk to commercial pilots every day, and we are a bit shocked by how many suffer from bad hearing and tinnitus
Protecting your hearing with a good headset, sounds to us like a very good idea.
. - User interface
You need to learn how to use the XM6. This is not anything special – cause you must learn to use any headset.
The XM6 has the speak-to-chat function, that must be switched off.
.
When is the Avee supporting the XM6 coming
We are planning to release the Avee for the XM6 mid mid-January 2026. We do not see any real problems with this integration, and feel confident that this will be a good release date.
.
Do not trust what we say
The easiest way to see that the XM6 is really a good aviation headset is to try it.
Go to your local headset store and put it on. Compare the ANR with ‘other’ headsets, and I feel confident that you will be gobsmacked and flabbergasted.
We are.
